I sat on the kitchen floor reading their messages while the dishwasher hummed beside me.<\/p>\n

There was more.<\/p>\n

Emily worried the baby might look like Caleb.<\/p>\n

He answered that we were brothers and looked enough alike.<\/p>\n

Then came the message that finally erased whatever remained of my disbelief.<\/p>\n

Caleb wrote that Mom had researched California paternity laws. She believed that because Emily and I were married, I would automatically be presumed the baby\u2019s legal father. If enough time passed before I challenged it, she thought I might be financially responsible regardless of biology.<\/p>\n
