Celeste believed he was bluffing when she slipped into his villa seeking vengeance for her father. Armed with a concealed knife and five years of grief, she walked straight into the Don’s most dangerous trap.

The door wasn’t locked.

Celeste stood in the corridor with her hand on the handle and understood that this should have stopped her, and let it not.

Villa Balaki at half past midnight was a house of cold stone and older money, and the guards had waved her through without a word — a woman in a white silk babydoll walking the second-floor corridor at that hour needed no explanation, and she had counted on that, because explaining herself would have required a lie she hadn’t had time to build.

She had spent three weeks building everything else. The invitation to the house party. The dress. The name she gave at the gate, which wasn’t hers.

The knife was strapped high on her right thigh, where a dress with no pockets still couldn’t hide it.

Inside the room, it was dark except for the moonlight, and the moonlight was enough. It laid a long pale shape across the bed — a man asleep on his side of a bed built for two, one arm thrown up over the pillow, no shirt, the sheet down at his waist.

Renzo Balaki.

Five years of photographs and court records and the testimony of people who had been paid to stay quiet, and here he was, breathing, forty inches away.

She crossed the floor without a sound. Her father had put her in Krav Maga at eight years old, then target shooting at eleven, then combat drills at fourteen — six days a week until the week he died — and none of it had ever felt like this. All of it had been theory. This was the first time her body had been asked to do the thing it was built for.

Three feet from the bed, his eyes opened.

There was no startle in it. No confusion. No hand groping for a weapon in the dark. His eyes opened and found her in the first instant and tracked her the way a camera tracks a moving object, and Celeste understood two things at once: that he was fully awake, and that he had been awake before her hand had touched the door.

He sat up slowly, without hurry, and looked at her.

“If you walk into my room like this again,” he said, “you’re not leaving alive.”

His voice was rough from sleep and carried no heat in it at all, and that was worse than any threat she had prepared for. She had rehearsed for shouting. She had rehearsed for a man who would reach for the bedside table. She had not rehearsed for this — for a man who could be woken at gunpoint-range by a stranger and sit up like someone being handed a menu.

And something in her chest, locked down and bolted for five years, came loose.

She smiled.

It was the first one in five years and it felt like the scar of one, and it had unsettled people at far less.

“You should know,” she said, “I’ll come in. But next time I’m coming armed.”

The silence afterward had weight to it. Somewhere out past the windows, beyond the cypress and the terraced slopes, Mount Etna stood against the sky with its plume of smoke rising into the dark — a mountain everyone on the island called asleep and everyone on the island knew was not.

Renzo Balaki watched her for a long moment, and she watched the exact instant his expression shifted from controlled surprise into something that had no business being on his face at half past midnight.

“Celeste Vicenzi,” he said.

Her name in his mouth sounded like an accusation and a recognition at the same time, which was not how she had imagined her own name being said ever again.

“Marco Vicenzi’s daughter.”

It was not a question.

“You remember him,” she said.

“I remember all of them.”

He tilted his head. His eyes went over her once — not the way men had been looking at her in that dress all week, and not the way she had planned for either. It was the look of a man reading a page.

“The question is what you want.”

She stepped out of the shadow of the bedpost.

“Confirmation. That it was you. That you gave the order.”

Outside, the volcano went on smoking. Renzo got out of bed with a movement that had no wasted motion in it, crossed to the window, and turned his back to her.

That was a test. She understood it a half-second after it happened. He was giving her his spine, in the dark, from eight feet, to see whether the daughter of Marco Vicenzi would take the opportunity.

She didn’t move.

“And if I had killed your father,” he said, to the glass, “you would already be dead.”

“So it was you.”

He turned around and for the first time there was something on his face that might have been interest.

“I neither confirm nor deny.”

He came toward her — measured, unhurried, giving her every chance to leave.

“But Celeste.” Her name again, and this time it came out softer and landed harder. “If you suspect. Why come here alone? Vulnerable?”

“Who says I’m vulnerable?”

He stopped too close. She had to tip her head back to keep her eyes on his, and she refused to look away first, and the heat coming off him was enough that she could feel it through the silk.

“You’re not what you appear to be,” he said.

“None of us are.”

“The difference is that I admit it.”

The air in the room changed. She was aware of the exact distance between their bodies — of the way his breathing had deepened, of the way hers seemed to have stopped being something she was doing on purpose.

“I could kill you here,” he said.

It came out almost like a whisper. He smelled of whiskey and cedar and something underneath that she couldn’t name and didn’t want to.

“You could,” Celeste said.

“But you won’t.”

“Why not?”

“Because I’m the only person who looks at you like you could bleed.” She paused. “And you like it.”

He went completely still.

She saw the pulse move in his throat. She saw his jaw work once and then stop. And in that stillness she felt the whole thing tip — five years of grief and planning and bullet-pointed revenge, and underneath all of it, unaccounted for, an honest current running the other way.

Then he stepped back. One step, and the spell broke cleanly, the way a thread does.

“Get out of my room.”

“I’m not finished.”

“Yes, we are.”

His hand closed on her arm before she could move. It didn’t hurt. It was simply firm, and far too warm against her skin.

“You’re staying at the villa tonight. There’s a storm coming through in the morning.” He looked down at her. “You decide if you want to continue this game or if you want to live.”

She looked at his hand, and then at his face.

“And if I choose the game?”

Something moved behind his eyes and a small smile formed, and it was the most dangerous thing that had happened to her all night.

“Then you’ll find out why I’m Don.”

He let her go.

“Guest room, second door on the right.” He turned away. Then: “And Celeste. Next time, knock first.”

She crossed the room, and she felt his gaze on her back the whole way, and when her hand reached the handle she couldn’t stop herself from looking back. He was where she had left him — half in the moonlight, half in shadow, entirely still. Two marble figures in a dark room looking at each other.

“Good night, Don Balaki.”

“Good night, Celeste Vicenzi.”

The way he said her whole name sounded like a promise and a threat in the same breath.

She got out of the room before she could do anything insane, found the second door on the right, and locked herself in.

Then her knees went.

She slid down the back of the door until she was on the floor with her heart going like something trapped, and the adrenaline that had carried her through the last twenty minutes drained out all at once and left her shaking. She brought her hand up, without deciding to, and pressed it to her arm where he had held her.

Still warm. Still doing something under the skin.

“Shit,” she said to the empty room.

She had come here with one objective: walk up to the man who killed her father, get a confession out of him, and finish it. And he had not confessed, and he had not denied, and he had looked at her as though she were the most interesting thing to happen to him in a decade.

Outside, the wind began to pick up — the storm he had mentioned, arriving on schedule. Lightning lit the room in one hard white frame. Thunder rolled down off the mountain and made the glass tremble.

Sicily was throwing a fit to match the one in her chest, and none of it changed the plan.

She was not backing down. Not after five years. Not this close.

The knife was still on her thigh. She had not needed it, and she had not once thought of it while she was standing three feet from him.

That was the part she did not examine.

She got up off the floor, found the bed, and did not sleep.

—

Morning arrived white and rinsed, the storm burned off into a sky so clean it looked painted, and Celeste woke on top of the guest bed still in yesterday’s silk, the knife strap biting a thin red line into her thigh where she’d forgotten to loosen it.

For a moment she didn’t remember where she was.

Then she did, all at once, and lay still with her eyes on the ceiling, running the whole night back through her head like a tape. The moonlight. His voice with no heat in it. Because I’m the only person who looks at you like you could bleed.

She sat up too fast and had to wait for the room to stop tilting.

There was a knock at the door before she’d found her shoes.

She opened it expecting a guard, or Renzo himself, and found neither. The woman on the other side was somewhere in her fifties, dressed in charcoal linen with her hair pulled back hard enough to read as a decision rather than a style, and she looked at Celeste the way a customs officer looks at a passport that doesn’t quite match the face.

“Miss Vicenzi.” She said the name like she already knew it wasn’t the name on the guest list. “I’m Adelina. I keep this house.”

“Good morning.”

“Is it.” Adelina’s eyes went once, briskly, down Celeste and back up, cataloguing the wrinkled silk, the bare feet, the faint mark on her thigh where the knife strap had sat all night. “Don Balaki wants you at breakfast. On the east terrace. Ten minutes.”

“And if I’d rather not?”

“Then I imagine he’ll come get you himself, and you’ll like that a great deal less.”

Adelina turned and walked off down the corridor without waiting to see whether the words landed, which told Celeste more about the woman’s confidence than anything she could have said directly.

Celeste found the east terrace by following the smell of espresso.

Renzo was already seated, in a plain white shirt open at the throat, a folder closed under his hand on the white tablecloth, Etna smoking quietly behind him in the middle distance like something that had also stayed up all night. He didn’t stand when she arrived. He watched her cross the terrace with the same unhurried attention he’d given her in the dark, only now there was daylight on it, and daylight made it worse, not better.

“You didn’t run,” he said, by way of greeting.

“Should I have?”

“Most people who break into my bedroom don’t stay for breakfast.”

“Most people who break into your bedroom don’t get an invitation.”

Something almost like amusement crossed his face and was gone before it could commit to anything. He gestured at the chair across from him, and she sat, and a member of the house staff appeared and vanished again, leaving coffee and fruit and a basket of bread she had no appetite for.

“You slept,” he said. It wasn’t a question, and it wasn’t true, and she suspected he knew both.

“Some.”

“Adelina tells me you didn’t touch the bed linens. Only sat on top of them. Fully dressed.” He turned his cup a quarter turn on its saucer, an idle gesture that felt, from him, anything but idle. “That’s not the behavior of a woman who came here for one confrontation and expected to leave in the morning.”

Celeste kept her hands flat on the table, where he could see them.

“I came here to find out the truth. I didn’t have a plan for after.”

“Everyone has a plan for after. Even people who tell themselves they don’t.” He opened the folder under his hand, just enough for her to see there was a single photograph inside, and closed it again before she could make out the image. “I had my people pull what exists on you overnight. Which, for a woman who spent three weeks building a false identity to get into this house, is remarkably little. No employer. No landlord who’ll give a name. An apartment lease that terminates the week you flew to Catania.”

Celeste’s pulse ticked up and she made sure nothing on her face agreed with it.

“You’ve been planning this for longer than three weeks,” he said. “You’ve been planning it for five years. The house party was just the door you finally found.”

“Is there a question in there, or are you just enjoying the sound of being right?”

“Both,” he said, and for the first time something in his voice had actual warmth in it, low and dangerous, worse than the cold had been. “But here’s the real question, Celeste. In five years, you never once tried to kill me from a distance. A rifle. A car. Poison in a drink at some event I couldn’t avoid. You had opportunities — I know, because my security flags them. You chose, instead, to walk into my bedroom at midnight with a knife strapped to your thigh and put yourself within arm’s reach of the one man in Sicily most likely to kill you for it.”

He leaned forward, and the smoke off the mountain seemed to hang behind him like something staged.

“That’s not a woman who wants me dead,” he said quietly. “That’s a woman who wanted to know, up close, whether she could go through with it. And this morning, sitting across from me eating my bread, you still don’t know the answer.”

Celeste opened her mouth to answer and a second man stepped out onto the terrace before she could — younger than Renzo, dark-suited, moving with the loose, coiled ease of someone paid to notice things quickly, and he stopped hard when he saw her, his eyes narrowing in a way that had nothing to do with the sun.

“Renzo.” His voice was tight. “A word. Now.”

“This is Celeste,” Renzo said, not moving. “She’s staying with us.”

“I know exactly who she is.” The man’s gaze didn’t leave her face. “Her father’s name was on a list. A list I built. And I’d like to know what she’s doing eating breakfast at this table before somebody explains to me why she isn’t already in the ground.”

—

Renzo didn’t stand, didn’t raise his voice, didn’t do any of the things a lesser man would have done with a subordinate speaking to him like that in front of a guest.

“Matteo.” His tone stayed level, which somehow made it worse. “Sit down.”

“With respect—”

“Sit. Down.”

Matteo sat, though every line of him stayed rigid, and his eyes never left Celeste, cataloguing her the way she’d once catalogued a set of fraudulent invoices — looking for the seam.

“Explain the list,” Renzo said.

“Five years ago, after the Vicenzi situation, I built a watch list. People with motive and the patience to use it. Wives. Children. Business partners who lost money when he went down. She’s been on it since the beginning.” Matteo’s jaw worked. “I flagged three attempts to enter your properties under false names in the last two years. I didn’t connect them to her until last night, when Adelina described a woman matching this description walking your corridor at midnight.”

“You’re thorough,” Renzo said. “I’ve always valued that.”

“Then value it now and let me remove the problem.”

“She’s not a problem. She’s my guest.”

Something moved across Matteo’s face — not quite disbelief, something colder and more calculating underneath it — and he leaned back in his chair as if recalibrating an entire strategy in real time.

“You’re letting a Vicenzi sit at your table,” he said slowly, “the morning after she broke into your bedroom with a weapon, and you’re calling her a guest.”

“I’m aware of how it sounds.”

“Renzo. I built that list to protect you. From exactly this.”

“And I appreciate it. Truly.” Renzo’s voice didn’t change, but something underneath it hardened, like water going to ice without a change in color. “But you don’t decide who sits at my table, Matteo. You never have.”

For a half-second, something flickered behind Matteo’s eyes that Celeste almost missed — not fear, not deference, something closer to calculation interrupted — and then it was gone, folded back under the professional mask so fast she could have imagined it.

“Of course,” Matteo said. “Forgive me.”

He stood, buttoned his jacket, and looked at Celeste one more time before he left the terrace — a look that had nothing polite left in it at all.

“He won’t forget this,” Celeste said, once the door had closed behind him.

“No,” Renzo agreed. “He won’t.”

“You didn’t have to defend me.”

“I didn’t defend you. I corrected him.” He picked his coffee back up as though the last three minutes hadn’t happened, though the set of his shoulders said otherwise. “There’s a difference, and you’d do well to understand it before you decide what any of this means.”

“What does it mean?”

“It means Matteo has run this house’s security for eleven years and has never once questioned an order of mine in front of a stranger.” He set the cup down without drinking from it. “Which tells me he’s more frightened of you than he’s letting on.”

“Frightened of me?”

“Or of what you might find out.” He watched her over the rim of the folder still sitting closed beneath his hand. “You said you wanted confirmation that I gave the order to kill your father. I’ve told you I neither confirm nor deny it. I’m going to tell you something else instead, and I want you to listen carefully, because I will only say it once.”

Celeste went very still.

“I reviewed the order file this morning, before you woke. The kind of thing I don’t normally revisit — five years old, closed, filed. It has my authorization code on it.” He paused. “It does not have my handwriting.”

The garden went quiet around them, or maybe it was just her hearing narrowing down to the two of them and nothing else.

“Someone forged your authorization,” she said.

“That’s one explanation.”

“What’s the other?”

“That I signed off on something I don’t remember signing off on, which would mean either I was compromised in a way I’ve never been compromised before, or—” He stopped himself, and for the first time since she’d met him, Renzo Balaki looked like a man choosing his next words with real caution, not performance. “Or someone with access to my codes used them without me. Which is a much shorter list of names than you’d think.”

Celeste’s mind went instantly to the terrace door Matteo had just walked out of.

“You think it was him.”

“I think,” Renzo said, “that I don’t know yet, and that a man who’s run my security for eleven years just watched me question the file in front of the one person on earth with a reason to burn this house down looking for the truth.” He finally met her eyes fully. “So we’re going to be very careful, Celeste, about who we tell what we know. Starting now.”

The door to the terrace opened again before she could answer, and Adelina stood in it, face gone the color of the tablecloth.

“Don Balaki.” Her voice was thin, controlled, badly. “There’s a car at the gate.
