Chapter 2<\/p>\n

I wanted to storm through my front door and demand answers from Lindsay. I wanted to know who had been visiting our house, why Chase had been locked in his bedroom, and what those strange papers meant. But Vernon stopped me before I reached my car.<\/p>\n

\u201cGo get your son first,\u201d he said firmly. \u201cThe house isn\u2019t going anywhere this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was right. I drove to the elementary school\u2019s early-morning program and signed Chase out. When he saw me standing in the doorway, his face lit up, but he immediately looked behind me.<\/p>\n

That frightened me more than anything I\u2019d heard on the watches.<\/p>\n
