Chapter 2<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t sleep during my last night in Paris. I sat on my hotel bed with a notebook, writing down every financial excuse my father had ever given me. The college tuition we couldn\u2019t afford, the broken furnace we supposedly couldn\u2019t replace, and the extra shifts that kept him away from home suddenly looked different.<\/p>\n

Mom met me at the airport the next morning. She stood awkwardly beside the security entrance, her hands folded together, as if she were afraid that even saying goodbye might frighten me away.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t owe me forgiveness,\u201d she said. \u201cI only wanted you to know I never stopped loving you.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time, I hugged her.<\/p>\n
