Chapter 2<\/p>\n

I rented a furnished apartment in Canton overlooking the harbor. It had one bedroom, a narrow kitchen, and windows that caught the afternoon sunlight. For the first time in fifteen years, I had a home where nobody called my name from another room demanding something.<\/p>\n

The following morning, I returned to Oldham Street while my parents were at church. Stacy was waiting in the kitchen, arms crossed, looking irritated.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom says you\u2019re being ridiculous,\u201d she announced. \u201cEverybody knows she didn\u2019t mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe meant every word.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t make this complicated, Sophia.\u201d<\/p>\n

I placed a blue spiral notebook on the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything you need is in here. Bills, appointments, repair companies, insurance information, and the church schedule. Since you do everything for Mom and Dad, you should have no trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stacy flipped through the pages.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood grief. It\u2019s just housework.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen you\u2019ll manage beautifully.\u201d<\/p>\n

I took Grandma\u2019s old wooden scrub brush from its hook beside the back door and placed it in her hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cSaturday mornings start at seven.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stared at the brush as though it were a dead animal.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve always had more free time than me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I picked up my suitcases.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

That first Saturday, I woke before sunrise and nearly drove to my parents\u2019 house out of habit. Instead, I made coffee in Grandma\u2019s old copper pot and watched the harbor wake up. My coffee stayed hot all the way to the bottom of the cup.<\/p>\n

It seemed like such a small thing.<\/p>\n

But I cried anyway.<\/p>\n

Within two weeks, the phone calls began. Mom said the laundry was piling up, Dad had missed an appointment, and Stacy couldn\u2019t figure out the online banking. Then the church secretary asked whether I was still preparing the Easter cookies.<\/p>\n

I politely redirected every question to Stacy.<\/p>\n

My mother left thirty-one messages.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father isn\u2019t getting any younger, Sophia. I hope you\u2019re proud of yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n
