Nobody moved as Judge Coleman rose from his chair. The attorneys exchanged bewildered looks, and Margaret Whitmore\u2019s smile disappeared for the first time since I\u2019d known her. I couldn\u2019t understand what had happened because the page the clerk showed him contained nothing more remarkable than an old case number from my childhood.<\/p>\n

The judge ordered a recess and led me down a narrow hallway. His chambers smelled of coffee and old books, and there was a framed child\u2019s drawing hanging behind his desk. The moment I saw it, I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n

It showed a blue lake, a diver beneath the water, and a small figure holding a rope at the surface. Above the picture, written in crooked letters, were the words \u201cSOMEBODY WHO STAYS.\u201d I remembered drawing it when I was ten years old, though I hadn\u2019t seen it in nearly three decades.<\/p>\n
