The cardiac floor went silent.

Audrey Hail stood beneath the white  hospital lights with 1 hand wrapped around her  glasses and the other still gripping the door to Trauma Room 3. Her pulse was racing, but her voice had not shaken.

6 ft away, Callum Ror stared at her.

2 armed men stood behind him. A hospital administrator hovered near the  nurses’ station, pale and useless. Somewhere beyond the doors, Callum’s father was fighting to stay alive, and Audrey had just told the most feared man in the building to watch his mouth.

3 minutes earlier, Callum had arrived as though the hospital belonged to him.

Black coat. Dark suit. Controlled stride.

His men cleared the elevator before the doors had fully opened. 1 phone call brought the chief administrator downstairs. Another placed private security at every entrance.

Eyeglasses

None of that gave him permission to enter Audrey’s treatment room.

“My father is in there.”

“I know.”

“Then move.”

Audrey stayed in front of the door.

“Dr. Park is stabilizing him. You’ll see him when she says it’s safe.”

Callum’s jaw tightened.

People usually reacted when his voice became quiet.

Audrey did not.

“Do you know who you’re speaking to?”

She pushed her glasses higher on her nose.

“Right now? A patient’s son.”

1 of his men glanced away, concealing either surprise or dangerous amusement.

Callum stepped closer.

He did not touch her. He did not need to.

“You work for this hospital,” he said. “Don’t confuse that with having authority over me.”

Audrey removed her glasses.

Without them, the dangerous man standing in front of her blurred slightly around the edges.

Maybe that helped.

“Don’t you dare talk to me like that again.”

Silence.

“Ms. Hail,” the administrator whispered.

Callum lifted 1 hand.

The administrator stopped.

Audrey waited for anger.

Instead, 1 corner of Callum Ror’s mouth moved.

Then the other.

He smiled.

Not the cold smile of a man preparing to make someone regret breathing.

A real smile.

Brief.

Surprised.

Almost disbelieving.

Audrey put her glasses back on.

“You find this funny?”

“No.”

His gaze remained on her.

“I find you interesting.”

“I’m not here to interest you.”

The smile disappeared, although something remained in his eyes.

Eyeglasses

Before either of them could speak again, an alarm sounded inside the room.

Audrey turned immediately.

The doors opened and a nurse rushed out.

“Pressure’s dropping.”

Audrey was already moving.

Callum caught 1 glimpse past her shoulder.

His father lay beneath hard white lights with an oxygen mask covering his face while physicians closed around the bed.

Callum stepped forward.

Audrey planted her palm against his chest.

“Stay here.”

“My father—”

“Needs doctors, not an audience.”

His eyes dropped to her hand.

So did everyone else’s.

Audrey slowly removed it.

For 1 dangerous second, nobody breathed.

Then Callum stepped back.

“Save him.”

For the 1st time, his words sounded less like an order than a plea.

Audrey looked at him once.

“We’re trying.”

The door closed between them.

47 minutes later, Audrey emerged exhausted, with a loose strand of dark hair against her cheek.

Callum was exactly where she had left him.

“Your father’s stable.”

His shoulders changed by barely an inch.

It was enough.

“He had a serious cardiac event,” Audrey continued. “Dr. Park will explain the details tonight. He needs quiet. No business discussions. No crowd around his bed.”

Callum looked toward the men behind him.

“You heard her. Clear the floor.”

They moved immediately.

Audrey blinked.

So did the administrator.

Callum walked past her, then stopped.

“What’s your name?”

Audrey glanced at the badge clipped to her scrubs.

“You can read.”

It almost brought the smile back.

“Audrey Hail.”

“Mr. Ror.”

“Callum.”

“Mr. Ror.”

This time, he did smile.

Audrey turned away before she could decide whether it annoyed her.

At 7:00 the next morning, she entered the critical care unit carrying Patrick Ror’s chart.

She stopped.

Callum sat beside his father’s bed.

The coat was gone. His sleeves were rolled back. He looked nothing like the man who had commanded an entire  hospital corridor only hours earlier.

Patrick opened tired eyes.

Then he saw Audrey.

“The  nurse with the  glasses.”

Audrey approached the monitors.

“That’s me.”

Patrick looked at his son, then back at her.

“Good.”

His fingers tightened weakly around the blanket.

“I want her on my rotation.”

Callum’s gaze found Audrey across the bed.

This time, neither of them smiled.

By 9:00 that morning, the cardiac floor no longer felt like a hospital.

It felt occupied.

2 of Callum’s men stood near the elevators. Another watched the stairwell. Hospital executives appeared every 20 minutes with careful smiles, asking whether the Ror family needed anything.

Audrey needed all of them gone.

She entered Patrick’s room and found a silver espresso cup in his hand.

She stopped.

Patrick froze halfway through a sip.

Callum stood near the window with a phone against his ear.

Audrey extended her hand.

“The coffee.”

Patrick frowned.

“It’s espresso.”

“Your heart doesn’t care about branding.”

Callum ended his call.

“My father asked for it.”

“And I’m taking it.”

Patrick looked toward his son as if expecting intervention.

Callum studied Audrey instead.

She raised an eyebrow.

After a moment, Callum removed the cup from his father’s hand and placed it in hers.

Patrick stared at him.

“Traitor.”

“You raised me badly.”

Audrey turned away before either man saw her smile.

The morning remained almost peaceful until Malcolm Ror arrived.

He was older than Callum, silver at the temples and dressed with the same expensive restraint.

3 men followed him toward Patrick’s room.

Audrey stepped into the doorway.

“1 visitor.”

Malcolm barely looked at her.

“They’re family.”

“Then the family can take turns.”

His gaze sharpened.

Behind Audrey, Patrick shifted in bed.

His monitor rose from 86 beats per minute to 98.

Malcolm noticed Callum approaching.

“Tell your nurse to move.”

Callum’s expression went still.

Audrey hated the small tension that entered her stomach while she waited for his answer.

“She isn’t my nurse.”

Malcolm gave a humorless smile.

“Then this should be easy.”

Patrick’s heart rate reached 106.

Audrey looked at the monitor.

The decision was made.

“Everybody out.”

Malcolm stepped forward.

Audrey pressed the staff-assistance button.

2 nurses appeared from the station.

She did not look to Callum for permission.

“Mr. Ror’s heart rate is rising. Visits are over.”

Malcolm’s face hardened.

“Do you understand who this man is?”

“Yes. My patient.”

Callum moved between them.

He did not raise his voice.

“My father needs quiet.”

Something old passed between the 2 men.

Authority.

Resentment.

Malcolm eventually stepped back.

As he turned, his eyes settled on Audrey.

There was no obvious anger in them.

Only assessment.

Audrey found that more troubling.

Minutes later, Patrick suddenly grabbed his chest.

The monitor alarm changed.

Callum reached the bed immediately.

“Dad.”

Audrey caught his arm.

Patrick’s breathing had shortened.

Dr. Park rushed in with the cardiac team.

Callum did not move.

Audrey stepped directly into his line of sight.

“Callum.”

It was the 1st time she had used his first name.

His eyes locked onto hers.

“Let us do our jobs.”

For a moment, the man everyone else obeyed looked only like a son watching his father disappear behind strangers.

Then Callum stepped back.

Audrey released him and turned toward Patrick.

20 minutes later, the episode was controlled.

When Audrey left the room, she found Callum alone at the end of the corridor beside a humming vending machine.

His men were nowhere near him.

He stared through a window at the city.

Audrey bought 2 coffees.

She offered him 1.

Callum looked at the paper cup.

“You confiscated my father’s.”

“Your father had a cardiac event.”

“And I didn’t.”

“Not yet.”

His mouth almost moved.

He accepted the coffee.

Their fingers brushed.

Neither mentioned it.

“You called me Callum.”

Audrey took a sip.

“Emergency conditions.”

“Should I arrange another one?”

She looked at him over the rim of her cup.

“That was almost charming.”

“Almost?”

“Don’t get ambitious.”

For the 1st time since Audrey had met him, Callum laughed quietly.

Then Patrick’s door opened.

Dr. Park approached.

“He’s stable, but recovery will be slower than we hoped. No stress. No  business. Someone needs to make sure he follows instructions.”

Callum glanced toward Audrey.

She shook her head immediately.

“No.”

Dr. Park almost smiled.

“I haven’t asked yet.”

“You were about to.”

Before she could continue, Patrick’s rough voice came from the room.

“Callum.”

They entered together.

Patrick looked exhausted, but his eyes were clear.

His gaze moved from his son to Audrey.

“Nobody discusses succession while I’m lying in this bed.”

Callum went motionless.

Audrey caught the word.

Succession.

Patrick looked directly at her.

“If they try, you throw them out.”

Audrey glanced toward Callum.

“That includes him.”

Patrick’s mouth twitched.

“Especially him.”

Callum should have objected.

Instead, his gaze remained on Audrey.

“Apparently,” he said quietly, “you have authority over me after all.”

Outside the glass wall, Malcolm Ror remained at the far end of the corridor.

He had heard every word.

Malcolm left the  hospital without saying goodbye.

By afternoon, 3 senior men from the Ror organization had called Callum directly.

None asked about Patrick’s  health.

They asked when Callum would return to work.

Audrey knew because Callum answered every call from the same chair beside his father’s bed.

“No,” he said into the phone. “Nothing changes until I say it changes.”

He listened.

“If Malcolm told you otherwise, ask Malcolm why he’s speaking for my father.”

He ended the call.

Patrick opened 1 eye.

“That’s insulting.”

Audrey entered carrying a walker.

Patrick looked at it as though she had brought him an enemy.

“Yes.”

“I run companies.”

“Congratulations. Can any of them teach your legs to work again?”

Callum looked down to hide a smile.

Patrick pointed at him.

“Don’t encourage her.”

10 minutes later, Patrick was barely standing.

Audrey kept 1 hand near his elbow while Callum remained on his other side.

Patrick completed 3 steps before his right knee buckled.

Callum caught him around the waist.

Audrey caught his arm.

For 1 second, all 3 of them nearly fell.

“Easy,” Audrey said.

“I’m easy.”

“You’re exhausting.”

Callum shifted his father’s weight carefully.

There was no impatience in him.

“Again,” Patrick said.

Audrey expected Callum to order his father to rest.

Instead, Callum lowered his voice.

“Only if she says yes.”

Patrick looked betrayed.

Audrey looked at Callum.

He was not teasing.

Something changed.

“2 more steps.”

Patrick managed 4.

When he finally sat down, sweat dampened his gray hair.

Callum crouched in front of him and adjusted the blanket over his knees.

There was nothing commanding in the gesture.

Nothing performed.

Only a son pretending not to notice his father’s trembling hands.

Audrey looked away first.

Later, a hospital aide arrived carrying an envelope and a set of car keys.

“Ms. Hail.”

Audrey frowned.

“A delivery from the Ror family.”

Inside the envelope was a card thanking her for Patrick’s care.

The keys belonged to a new black Mercedes waiting downstairs.

Audrey closed the envelope.

“No.”

The aide blinked.

Callum entered and saw the keys.

“I didn’t send that.”

“I believe you.”

Something shifted in his expression, as though the answer surprised him.

Audrey handed the envelope and keys back.

“Please return them.”

“It’s already registered.”

“Then unregister it.”

After the aide left, Callum leaned against the wall.

“Most people would keep the car.”

“Most people aren’t offered one by a family currently turning my cardiac unit into Switzerland with armed security.”

“That isn’t how Switzerland works.”

“You understood the point.”

He did.

For the 1st time, Callum seemed to look at Audrey without attempting to calculate what she wanted from him.

A shout came from Patrick’s room.

They rushed inside.

Patrick was halfway out of bed, reaching for his walker.

“I can do it myself.”

“No, you can’t,” Audrey said.

“I’m not dying in a chair.”

“You’re not dying anywhere today.”

Patrick attempted a stubborn step.

His balance failed.

Callum moved from the left.

Audrey from the right.

They caught him together.

Her hand landed over Callum’s on Patrick’s arm.

Their faces were suddenly inches apart.

Neither moved.

Patrick looked between them.

“If you 2 are going to stare at each other, either help me walk or get married. I’m too old to stand here waiting.”

Audrey nearly lost her grip.

Callum laughed.

Not the dangerous half-smile from their first confrontation.

A real laugh.

Warm enough to make Audrey notice how close his hand remained to hers.

She pulled away.

“Sit down, Patrick.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

1 hour later, the elevator opened.

Malcolm stepped out.

This time, 4 older men in dark suits followed him.

Callum rose from beside his father.

The warmth disappeared from his face.

Malcolm stopped outside the room.

“Patrick’s illness has created a problem.”

Callum’s voice became quiet.

“My father is recovering.”

“I’m not talking about his  health.”

Behind Malcolm, the 4 men waited.

Malcolm looked through the glass toward Patrick.

Then toward Audrey.

“The organization needs to know who’s actually in charge.”

For the 1st time, Audrey understood that Patrick Ror’s  hospital room was no longer merely protecting a sick man.

It had become the center of a succession fight.

Malcolm entered Patrick’s room without waiting to be invited.

The 4 men accompanying him remained near the glass wall, their silent attention making the hospital room feel smaller.

Patrick’s monitor began rising.

Audrey noticed first.

“5 minutes. Then everyone leaves.”

Malcolm ignored her.

“The organization cannot operate on uncertainty.”

His heart rate climbed again.

Malcolm continued.

“That’s enough.”

Malcolm looked at her.

“This is family  business.”

“Out.”

Malcolm laughed once.

“Callum, are you seriously allowing a nurse to end this meeting?”

Callum’s expression became unreadable.

The room changed.

1 of the older men glanced toward another.

“Interesting choice.”

“No,” Callum said. “Necessary one.”

Malcolm left with the others.

Patrick’s heart rate gradually dropped.

Audrey waited until it was below 90 before following Callum into the corridor.

He was already giving Theo instructions.

“It was meant to be.”

Audrey waited until Theo left.

“You shouldn’t have done that.”

“You were the nurse.”

“And now 4 men in your organization think I can influence you.”

Callum became still.

Audrey stepped closer.

“I’m responsible for Patrick’s medical care. I’m not your shield in whatever war your family is starting.”

For once, Callum did not answer immediately.

Then he nodded.

“You’re right.”

Audrey blinked.

“That easy?”

“No.”

His gaze remained on hers.

“Just true.”

Before she could answer, an alarm sounded inside Patrick’s room.

They moved together.

Patrick had attempted to stand without assistance and pulled loose 1 of his monitor leads.

During the rush to steady him, an orderly collided with Audrey.

Her glasses fell.

Callum caught Patrick.

Audrey caught the bed rail.

A shoe came down inches from her glasses before Callum swept them out of the way.

Later, after Patrick had been settled and thoroughly insulted by 3 medical professionals, Audrey finished her shift.

She found Callum alone at a small table near the darkened family lounge.

Her glasses were in his hands.

1 temple was badly bent.

“You’re making that worse.”

Callum looked up.

“I’m offended by your lack of faith.”

Without her glasses, his face softened around the edges.

His hands did not.

They remained precise and patient.

When he finished, he slid the glasses across the table.

Audrey reached for them.

Their fingers touched.

Neither immediately withdrew.

“You listened today,” she said.

“When I told you that you were wrong.”

Callum’s gaze remained on her hand.

“Don’t sound so surprised.”

“I’m trying not to.”

He looked up.

The distance between them suddenly seemed too small.

Audrey put her  glasses on.

Callum returned sharply into focus.

That was somehow worse.

Theo appeared at the entrance to the lounge.

Eyeglasses

Whatever had been forming between them disappeared.

“Callum.”

His tone changed the room.

Callum stood.

“What happened?”

“3 captains met with Malcolm tonight.”

Silence.

“Which 3?”

Theo named them.

Callum’s jaw tightened.

“They think what happened upstairs means Patrick isn’t leading anymore.”

Audrey understood before Theo finished.

Malcolm had not simply lost the confrontation.

He had used it.

Callum’s decision to respect Audrey’s medical authority had become evidence inside his own world that someone else might be controlling him.

By noon the next day, the rumor had reached people who had never met Audrey.

Callum learned it from Theo.

Audrey learned it from the  hospital’s chief administrator.

Halfway through her shift, she was summoned to his office.

Dr. Naomi Park was already there.

The administrator folded his hands.

“We’re adjusting Mr. Ror’s care team.”

Audrey remained standing.

“What?”

“We received concerns.”

“Medical concerns?”

A pause.

“No.”

Naomi’s expression hardened.

The administrator continued.

“Some members of the Ror family feel your relationship with the patient’s son has created unnecessary tension.”

Audrey almost laughed.

Instead, she asked, “Am I being removed from Patrick’s rotation?”

“Yes.”

The door opened behind her.

Callum entered.

No one had invited him.

He placed his phone on the desk.

“Put her back.”

The administrator went pale.

“Mr. Ror—”

“You have 30 seconds.”

Audrey turned.

“Callum.”

He looked at her.

“No.”

1 word.

Quiet.

Absolute.

Callum’s eyes narrowed.

“They’re punishing you because of me.”

“Probably.”

“I can fix that.”

“I know.”

“Then why are we arguing?”

Audrey stepped closer and lowered her voice.

“Because if you fix my life every time someone makes it difficult, eventually neither of us will know whether I chose any of it.”

Something changed in his face.

She expected resistance.

Instead, Callum picked up his phone.

“What are you going to do?”

“Nothing.”

The administrator visibly relaxed.

Callum looked at him.

“Don’t mistake restraint for permission.”

Then he left.

Audrey stared after him.

Naomi waited until the door closed.

“That,” she said quietly, “was probably harder for him than threatening the building.”

Audrey appealed the reassignment through Dr. Park.

The decision changed only after Patrick refused afternoon rehabilitation with the replacement  nurse.

“This is now affecting patient compliance.”

20 minutes later, Audrey was reinstated.

No threats.

No intervention from Callum.

When Audrey entered Patrick’s room, Callum stood near the window.

“I heard.”

Audrey checked Patrick’s monitor.

“Your father is stubborn.”

“Genetic.”

She glanced at him.

“You stayed out of it.”

“You told me to.”

“I didn’t think you would.”

The words landed harder than she intended.

Callum looked at her.

“Neither did I.”

For the rest of the shift, he kept his distance.

Audrey found that more unsettling than his attention.

Near midnight, she left through the employee entrance.

Rain hammered Manhattan, turning the street silver.

Audrey opened her umbrella.

A black SUV waited at the curb.

Callum stood beside it without a coat, rain darkening the shoulders of his shirt.

Audrey stopped.

“You know cars have interiors.”

“I’ve been told.”

“Were you waiting for me?”

“Yes.”

Her heartbeat changed.

“You could have called.”

“You might have said no.”

“And this prevents that?”

“No.”

He held her gaze.

“It gives you the choice to walk away.”

There was no hidden test in his voice.

No command.

Audrey stepped beneath the awning.

“You’re becoming dangerously reasonable.”

“I’m having a difficult week.”

She laughed.

Something eased between them.

Callum looked at the raindrops on her glasses.

“You kept them.”

“You fixed them poorly.”

He raised his hand toward her face.

Then stopped before touching her.

That hesitation changed everything.

When she pulled away, Callum did not pursue her mouth.

He simply looked at her as though restraint had suddenly become the most difficult discipline he had ever practiced.

Audrey swallowed.

“That was probably a mistake.”

Neither moved.

Then Theo called.

Callum answered.

His expression changed while he listened.

“When?”

His gaze lifted toward Audrey.

“Are you sure?”

He ended the call.

“What happened?” Audrey asked.

Callum’s voice had become cold.

“Malcolm knew you were being removed from my father’s care before the hospital told you.”

The warmth disappeared.

Audrey frowned.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

Callum looked toward the  hospital.

For the 1st time since Audrey had met him, the danger in his face was directed not at an enemy but at a question.

A question that now stood between them.

“Malcolm knew before I did.”

“Yes.”

“Then ask him how.”

“I will.”

Callum did not move.

That unsettled her.

10 minutes earlier, she had kissed him because he had finally given her a choice without controlling its outcome.

Now he had become unreadable again.

His eyes shifted toward hers.

Too careful.

Audrey stepped backward beneath the awning.

“Good night.”

His hand moved as though he might stop her.

He did not.

The following morning, Callum found Malcolm exactly where he expected him.

Inside Patrick’s company offices, occupying a conference room he had no authority to use.

Callum entered alone.

Malcolm smiled.

“How’s the nurse?”

Callum closed the door.

“How did you know she was being reassigned?”

“I know things.”

Callum’s voice remained quiet.

“Be careful.”

Malcolm laughed.

The sound followed Callum back to the hospital.

So did the doubt.

By afternoon, Callum made a decision he would later wish he could undo.

Audrey entered Patrick’s room carrying medication.

Callum stood near the window.

“My father may be discharged Friday.”

“That’s fast.”

“Dr. Park thinks home recovery may be better.”

Audrey looked toward the sleeping Patrick.

“Naomi didn’t mention that.”

“It came up recently.”

She studied him.

Then continued checking the medication.

“All right.”

Nothing else.

That evening, Callum waited.

No call from Malcolm.

No movement from the captains.

No rumor.

By morning, Theo confirmed it.

Nothing had traveled.

Callum should have felt relieved.

Instead, he felt sick.

He found Audrey inside a supply room counting sealed kits.

“We need to talk.”

She did not turn.

“Patrick isn’t being discharged Friday.”

Silence.

Audrey placed a package onto the shelf.

“I know.”

Callum stopped.

She faced him.

“Dr. Park asked me this morning why you thought he was leaving. She never approved it.”

Callum said nothing.

Audrey’s expression changed as she understood.

“You gave me false information.”

“I needed to know whether Malcolm was getting information through you.”

“And he wasn’t.”

“No.”

“That must be comforting.”

“It isn’t.”

“No.”

Callum took 1 step toward her.

Audrey stepped back.

The movement hurt him more than he expected.

“You could have asked me.”

“I know.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

“Because you thought if I knew you suspected me, I might lie better.”

Callum had faced men who wanted him dead without blinking.

He had commanded others under pressure.

He could not find a clean answer for her.

Audrey reached into her scrub pocket.

She removed the slim black  glasses case Callum had left after repairing her frames.

She placed it on the counter between them.

His gaze dropped.

“Audrey.”

“You wanted proof that you could trust me.”

“Now you have it.”

“Why does that sound like goodbye?”

“Because you needed proof.”

He flinched almost invisibly.

Audrey walked past.

Callum caught her wrist.

Then released it immediately.

“I am sorry.”

Audrey stopped.

The words sounded unfamiliar coming from him.

For 1 dangerous moment, she wanted to turn around.

Instead, she said, “I believe you.”

Callum’s voice lowered.

“But?”

“Being sorry doesn’t make me safe with you.”

She left.

Callum did not follow.

It was the 1st test he had ever failed by obtaining the correct answer.

1 hour later, Theo found him outside Patrick’s room.

“Malcolm called a formal leadership gathering.”

“When?”

“Friday morning.”

Callum looked through the glass at his father.

Friday.

The false discharge date.

Theo continued.

“He’s telling everyone Patrick is expected to appear and settle the question himself.”

Patrick was not medically ready.

Malcolm knew it.

Callum finally understood the trap.

If Patrick remained in the  hospital, Malcolm would call it weakness.

If Callum forced him out, he would risk his father’s life to prove his own authority.

Across the unit, Audrey emerged from another patient’s room.

For the 1st time since Callum Ror had smiled at the  nurse who dared challenge him, Audrey no longer cared whether he was amused, angry, or impressed.

She simply did not trust him.

Audrey saw them through Patrick’s window.

“11 senior captains downstairs,” Theo said. “Malcolm has 7 leaning his way. They expect Patrick at 10:00.”

The choice Malcolm had constructed.

Patrick’s safety on 1 side.

Callum’s authority on the other.

The door opened again.

Malcolm entered without knocking.

Schedule Urgent Care

“You’re running late.”

Theo moved forward, but Callum raised a hand.

Malcolm looked toward Patrick.

“The cars are ready.”

“He isn’t cleared,” Audrey said.

Malcolm barely acknowledged her.

“We need 15 minutes.”

“You’re not getting 15 seconds.”

Patrick’s monitor climbed.

Callum saw it.

Malcolm saw Callum notice it.

Then Malcolm smiled.

“Look at you.”

Callum’s eyes hardened.

“Men downstairs are deciding whether you can lead this family, and you’re standing here waiting for permission from a nurse.”

The room tightened.

Malcolm had chosen his weapon carefully.

Not force.

Humiliation.

Callum had spent his life answering doubt by increasing pressure until everyone else broke first.

Audrey knew that now.

She also knew he had every reason not to trust her after what had happened between them.

Callum turned toward her.

There was no secret signal.

No test.

No trap.

“What does my father need?”

Malcolm laughed under his breath.

Audrey held Callum’s gaze.

“Rest. Controlled rehabilitation. No leadership meeting. No transport unless Dr. Park clears it.”

“If I keep him here, I may lose those men downstairs.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Audrey’s throat tightened.

“No. Medically, keeping him here is the right choice.”

Callum nodded once.

Then he turned toward Theo.

“Cancel the appearance.”

Patrick cursed.

Malcolm smiled.

Theo did not move.

“Callum, once I tell them, I may not get them back.”

“I know.”

Callum looked at his father.

“I’m not gambling your life to win a room.”

Then he faced Malcolm.

“If they need a performance to know who I am, they can follow you.”

Malcolm’s smile widened.

He believed he had won.

Callum removed his phone.

“Clear the private entrance. Nobody moves Patrick without Dr. Park’s authorization. Nobody.”

His gaze briefly met Audrey’s.

He was not asking her forgiveness.

He was not testing whether she would stay.

He was making the choice without knowing what it would earn him.

That affected Audrey differently.

Theo entered the corridor and made the call.

Within minutes, the consequences appeared.

3 captains who had been aligned with Callum crossed the lobby toward Malcolm.

Theo watched through the glass.

“It’s happening.”

Callum did not look.

Audrey did.

Then she turned back toward him.

“You knew that would happen.”

“Yes.”

“And you still did it.”

Callum’s voice was low.

“My father needed me to.”

A pause.

“And you told me the truth. I decided to trust it.”

Audrey had no answer.

Not yet.

Malcolm buttoned his jacket.

“By noon, this will be over.”

Callum met his eyes.

“Then you’d better be right.”

Malcolm walked out.

Patrick sank against the pillow.

Audrey reached for the blood-pressure cuff.

Theo’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Callum.”

“What?”

Theo looked toward the elevators.

“Malcolm isn’t going downstairs.”

The doors opened.

4 men stepped out beside Malcolm.

A wheelchair rolled between them.

Theo’s voice dropped.

“He’s coming back for Patrick.”

Audrey reached Patrick’s doorway before Malcolm arrived.

The wheelchair stopped 3 ft from her.

Malcolm stood behind it with 4 men.

Theo moved to Callum’s side.

“Move,” Malcolm said.

“No.”

“This stopped being a medical decision.”

“Not while he’s my patient.”

Schedule Urgent Care

Malcolm reached for the wheelchair.

Callum stepped forward.

The 4 men shifted immediately.

So did Theo.

Callum’s voice cut through the corridor.

“Nobody touches anyone.”

Everyone stopped.

Malcolm smiled.

“Still taking orders from her.”

Behind Audrey, Patrick attempted to rise.

She turned.

“Stay down.”

“I’m not helpless.”

“I know. That’s why I’m asking you not to prove it.”

Patrick stared at her, breathing hard.

Then he settled back.

Malcolm looked at Callum.

“7 captains are downstairs waiting for their leader. Your father can settle this in 10 minutes.”

“Dr. Park hasn’t cleared him.”

“Of course.”

Malcolm glanced toward Audrey.

“Because apparently the Ror family answers to a woman in  glasses.”

Eyeglasses

Callum’s jaw tightened.

Malcolm stepped closer.

“First she humiliates you in front of your men. Then you let her throw family out of Patrick’s room. Now you’re risking the organization because she tells you to.”

There it was.

The invitation.

Become angry.

Prove himself.

Make everyone afraid again.

Audrey looked at Callum with the same steady expression she had given him on the 1st night.

Callum saw it.

Then he smiled.

Malcolm’s expression faltered.

The smile meant something different now.

Callum was not amused by Audrey’s refusal to obey him.

He trusted it.

“Open the door,” Callum said.

Audrey hesitated.

Then she stepped aside.

Malcolm’s smile returned.

Until Callum continued.

“If my father wants to go, I won’t stop him.”

Patrick looked toward his son.

Callum entered and crouched beside the bed.

“No tests. No pressure. Your choice.”

Patrick looked toward Malcolm.

“You told them I was appearing.”

Malcolm’s confidence shifted.

“They needed certainty.”

“I asked you a question.”

“Yes.”

“Did I authorize it?”

Silence.

Patrick already had the answer.

“No,” Malcolm said.

Patrick removed the oxygen line from beneath his nose.

Audrey immediately reached toward it.

Patrick raised 1 finger.

“30 seconds.”

He looked past Malcolm toward the men behind him.

“You came here to carry me out of a  hospital against my doctor’s orders because my brother promised you I wanted it.”

Nobody answered.

Malcolm’s voice sharpened.

“Patrick, this is bigger than your recovery.”

Patrick’s expression hardened.

“That sentence just cost you more than you understand.”

Malcolm gripped the wheelchair handles.

“We’re going downstairs.”

“No,” Patrick said.

Malcolm froze.

Then he looked toward the 4 men.

“Take him.”

Nobody moved.

Theo stepped forward first.

“No.”

1 of Malcolm’s men lowered his eyes.

Another stepped away from the wheelchair.

Callum remained beside Patrick.

His voice never rose.

“You wanted everyone to see who they obey, Malcolm.”

Malcolm stared at him.

Callum stood.

“Now they have.”

Patrick reached for Audrey’s hand.

She helped him sit higher.

Not because Malcolm demanded a performance.

Because Patrick chose to face him.

“My voting authority in the family companies is suspended while I recover,” Patrick said. “But my ownership isn’t.”

Malcolm went pale.

Patrick continued.

“Your access to Ror-controlled accounts, offices, vehicles, and representation ends today. You no longer speak for me.”

Malcolm turned toward Callum.

“You can’t hold the captains without me.”

“I don’t need to hold them.”

Callum looked toward the men in the corridor.

“They decide who they follow.”

Theo remained beside him.

2 of Malcolm’s 4 men crossed over.

The others stepped away from Malcolm entirely.

His phone began ringing.

He looked at the screen.

Another call followed.

Theo’s expression remained cold.

“The 3 companies that deal with you because Patrick guarantees your word will hear his decision before you reach the elevator.”

Malcolm’s influence had never truly belonged to him.

It had been borrowed.

Patrick had just taken it back.

Malcolm left without another word.

No one followed.

Only after the elevator doors closed did Audrey realize she was still holding Patrick’s hand.

His fingers trembled.

She replaced his oxygen line.

Callum watched her.

The organization remained fractured.

Patrick remained ill.

Several captains downstairs might never return to Callum.

But Malcolm could no longer command anyone in Patrick’s name.

Minutes later, Audrey stepped into the corridor.

Callum followed.

They stopped almost exactly where she had confronted him on the 1st night.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Then Callum held out the black glasses case she had returned.

Eyeglasses

“I kept it.”

Audrey looked at the case.

Then at him.

She did not take it.

Not yet.

But she did not walk away.

The elevator doors had closed on Malcolm.

Nobody celebrated.

Patrick’s monitor was still too fast.

3 captains had abandoned Callum that morning.

Removing Malcolm’s authority had stopped him from speaking for Patrick, but it had not repaired every fracture he had created.

Audrey still had not accepted the  glasses case.

Callum lowered his hand.

“I understand.”

Audrey looked at him.

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

There was no challenge in his answer.

No attempt to force her to prove anything.

Dr. Park emerged from Patrick’s room.

“He needs rest. Actual rest. I want everyone off this floor except essential staff.”

Callum nodded toward Theo.

“You heard her.”

“The captains downstairs are waiting.”

“They can wait somewhere else.”

“You could lose more of them.”

“Then I lose them.”

There was no drama in the answer.

No performance of sacrifice.

Only consequence.

Callum looked at Audrey.

“My father stays.”

Then he walked away.

He did not ask Audrey to follow.

That was why she did.

She found him alone near the vending machine where she had once given him bad coffee and pretended not to notice how frightened he had been.

Callum fed a dollar into the machine.

It rejected the bill.

He tried again.

Audrey stopped beside him.

“You can command an organization, but the vending machine has standards.”

Callum glanced toward her.

“That’s becoming a theme in my life.”

She almost smiled.

“Callum.”

He stopped fighting the machine.

“I was wrong.”

Audrey waited.

“I don’t mean Malcolm. I mean you.”

His voice remained low.

“I kept pushing people until fear told me what they wanted. I thought if someone survived the test, I could trust them. If they didn’t, I told myself I’d been right.”

Audrey folded her arms.

“That sounds lonely.”

“It was efficient.”

“Was?”

Callum looked at her.

“Today I trusted you before I knew what it would cost me.”

The words landed quietly.

He did not move closer.

“I’m not asking you to reward me for that.”

Audrey’s throat tightened.

That was the difference.

The Callum she had first met would have needed an answer.

This man was leaving her free to give none.

Audrey reached into his jacket pocket.

Callum went still.

She removed the black glasses case.

Eyeglasses

“You kept carrying this?”

“Yes.”

“That’s strangely sentimental.”

“I’ve had a difficult week.”

This time, Audrey smiled.

She opened the case.

It was empty.

Her glasses were already on her face.

She looked at him.

“What exactly were you planning to do with this?”

“Nothing.”

“You carried an empty glasses case around for nothing?”

“I wasn’t planning.”

Audrey laughed softly.

Callum raised his hand toward her face.

Just as he had outside the  hospital in the rain, he stopped before touching her.

Audrey understood the question.

She leaned into his palm.

Callum exhaled.

His thumb moved once along her cheek.

“I don’t need you to protect me from everything,” she said.

“I know.”

“And if I disagree with you—”

“I’ve noticed.”

Her smile softened.

Audrey placed her hand over his.

“I was afraid needing someone meant giving them power over me.”

Callum remained silent.

“That’s why I walked away.”

“You had every right.”

“I know.”

A pause.

“And now?”

Audrey stepped closer.

“Now I’m choosing to come back.”

She kissed him.

There was no rain this time.

No ringing phone.

No fear disguised as humor.

Callum’s arm settled carefully around her waist, leaving her every opportunity to move away.

She did not.

When the kiss ended, Audrey rested her forehead against his.

For several seconds, the hospital seemed to disappear.

Then Callum looked at her glasses.

Eyeglasses

“You know those are still slightly crooked.”

“You fixed them.”

“I did my best.”

“Your best was terrible.”

“I could buy you new ones.”

Audrey slowly lowered her glasses down her nose.

Callum recognized the expression immediately.

“Don’t you dare.”

He froze.

Then he smiled.

The same unexpected smile she had seen the night they met.

Only now Audrey understood what existed behind it.

“There it is again,” she whispered.

“What?”

“That smile.”

Callum’s hand remained loose around her waist.

“The 1st time you saw it,” he said, “was the 1st time someone told me no and I didn’t want them to leave.”

Audrey pushed her  glasses back into place.

Then she took Callum’s hand.

Not because he reached for hers.

Because she chose it.

“Well,” she said as she led him toward Patrick’s room, “you’re still not allowed to talk to me like that again.”

Callum looked down at her and smiled.
